atmega i PEN

Z noty katalogowej atmega128:

PEN is a programming enable pin for the SPI Serial Programming mode. By holding this pin low during a Power-on Reset, the device will enter the SPI Serial Programming mode. PEN has no function during normal operation.

I w sekcji o programowaniu szeregowym:

As an alternative to using the RESET signal, PEN can be held low during Poweron Reset while SCK is set to "0".

Czyli jeśli system nie korzysta i nie ma wyprowadzonego na złącze programujące sygnału reset (bo używa np. Power-On-Reset), to żeby wejść w tryb programowania należy ustawić PEN=0 na czas trwania wewnętrznego sygnału zerującego po włączeniu zasilania.
