"Power" / "Wattage" question

Hi everybody. I have a question about "power"



What is the significance of "power" in electronics? I know that its the voltage x the current, but how is that significant in any way?



For example, when I buy a 30 watt light or my speaker is 15 watts or something, what does that really mean and is that wattage for my speaker electrical wattage?



Also, I read that circuits are designed for "maxiumun power" and I've heard of power losses (that turn to heat or something). Why are they designed for maximum power? also what is a power loss in this meaning (its not voltage x current loss, right?)?

Note: please give as technical and detailed an answer as you'd like / see fit. I really want to understand the concept and even though i dont know a lot about the technical parts (im still a high school student!) i want to get into this stuff some day maybe.

Power is the rate of doing work. Work is when a force moves a mass. So power measures the rate at which a force moves a mass. In electricity what is the force? What is moving and how does it do work. You can find these things.

Your "power" is what can be supplied by the source, be it the socket on your wall, the grid supplying your town or the capability of the generating station. All of them have a finite limit.

It means that when excited be proper inputs they will produce responses within they range. Lamp - heat and light, speaker - (usually) noise, meaning pressure waves in air which needs some work to be done.

Very simple, the usual power company supply was (maybe still is) XXXvAC

-10% +15%, meaning that within this range your 30W lamp should still perform, no matter where you live. But take it from 115vAC country to a normal 220-240vAC region and the lamp finishes in a flash. Vice-versa and it is not performing.

Wrong! We are working with electricity so the supply of energy is "voltage x current" and ANY losses translate back to this.

Right, but you can have percentages of usability. Let's say a bulb... ~90% Heat and the needed light. Or a dieselmotor... 12% movement much heat and, of course, some loss on the moving parts inside and outside of the wagoon, not being transformed to the needed movement. E.g. the ranting diesel-vibrations everywhere on the car = loss.

It is always a relate, to what do I need.

An Electric heating-radiator for example, is the most effective electric-device, IMHO.

An electrical / electronic device may have a "power input", a "power output" and a "power dissipation".

Perhaps you need to learn basic physics before you tackle electronics.

A heat pump provides more heat per watt.

Power is the rate of transfer of energy. If you have a 30 watt light, it moves energy from the power lines to the surroundings at a rate of

30 watts, or 30 joules per second. Joules are voltage *current * time; they are the same size as newton-meters (force * distance). Except for size, joules are the same thing as BTUs, kilowatt-hours, foot-pounds, torque*rpm. Power is the product of two things, as you can see from the examples. For electricity, the two things are voltage and current. Energy is the product of power and time.

Thus a 250W lamp is much brighter than a 25W lamp, a 300W sterio is louder than a 30W one (if they're honest about the watts) and a 300W heater produces less heat than a 3KW one etc...

The key thing to remember is this - after compression, the refrigerant contains the heat power expended by the motor as 'superheat'. Thus without the heat pump effect you get almost all of the motor power as heat - as you would do if you used it to run a resistance heater. Then you also get the heat captured and transferred from the heat source. That is why a heat pump is more effective than a straight fan heater say.

I was in Physics class one day and the teacher was finally on my favorite subject. He turned rather red when I pointed out a mistake he made, but he was a gentleman about it and even told the class that I had more experience in electronics than he did. I made very good grades in his class, and got an "A" for my class project, that I ended up selling him. ;-)

I had a irritating English teacher that gave the vague assignment to "Prepare and give a 15 minute talk on a subject you know well". I didn't like her, so I chose "The theory and application of single sideband communications". When my time came, I drew charts on the blackboard and gave my talk. You could tell she was completely lost. She started yelling at me that it was all made up, because she had a college degree, and she was smarter than I was. One of the other students stood up and told her he was a amateur radio operator, and he finally understood sideband. She was so loud another teach ahd called the dean. He walked in as she was threatening to fail me for the rest of the semester for "My stunt". The dean quickly informed her that she didn't have the authority to do it, and that he was the one who decided if her contract was renewed for the next year. He asked what the assignment was and I told him. She claimed I was lying, so he asked the rest of the class. They repeated the assignment, word for word, and the ham told him it was an excellent talk on the subject. She was ordered to give me an "A", and warned to behave or she would be out the door. He also reminded her that I was the school's resident electronics expert and that when he wanted me released from class for an emergency, she better not refuse to let me go, again. I enjoyed every class at that school except her class and Gym. ;-)

You need condense technic, electrotechnic and water-pipe technic (plumber).

Even better is wood. Just ask the rich, who could pay the bill for an electric-resistor heated House easy. The poorer are combining it with some cooking.

Personally I like (prefer) both... log fire heat and log fire cooked meal.
