Reading packages of breakfast cereals in a store - great, I'm thinking, they are putting no sugar in these. Must be the new and improved labeling approved with the new food pyramid . . . finally healthy food . . . until I read further.
No sugar - instead they have "crystallized cane juice"

Considering the crap that's posted so frequently, I see no need to complain about a properly identified OT post. For those who feel a kinship with other regulars on a NG, it seems appropriate to be able to discuss something like this.

Or corn syrup, sucrose, fructose, dextrose, high fructose corn syrup. I just looked on the hersheys syrup, the first 4 ingredients are, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, sugar, water, and last, cocoa. Mike

How much is added? Remember the amount is the poison. Cane juice is much the same as fruit juice. Of course, what does the crystallisation process reject. Refined cane sugar is "bad" because they have "refined" some of the valuable nutrients out of it. Energy is an essential nutrient. Too much is harmful, like in so many things. jack

Have a look at what is in apple or pear juice. BTW, fructose has an advantage over glucose that it is absorbed more slowly, but it still contains the same amount of energy. jack
ps Too much energy (calories), protein, water, fat will cause you harm, even if you do get all the nutrients you require.

I found on the label of a vitamin tonic made in Mexico and marketed in USA, an ingredient called "1,1,1-trimethylxanthine" which is the chemical name for caffeine!

Hi Nick You have changed the subject line and messed up the threading so that on my reader, your message is an orphan.
Manufacturers who try to bamboozle customers with different names for ingredients have a powerful enemy in Google. A quick search shows their subterfuge. I believe anything sold in Australia with caffeine must be warned about on the label. jack

Big improvement over corn syrup.
There are lots of weird expressions for MSG.

But sugar tastes better, and is healthier. Around here, you can buy a corn-syrup American Coke for a dollar, or a smuggled Mexican Coke, made with real sugar, for $1.50.
Hershey's is crap, of course.

Strictly scientifically, there is no such single thing as 'sugar' though. Many chemicals are sugars though.
The nice taste is usually due the flavour of the non-sugar content from any given source. Maple syrup and cane sugar seem to excel in this regard.

There's nothing poisonous about sugar, unless you mainline it.
Sucrose fructose. And lots of people drink fruit juice, but few drink cane juice, unless it's converted to rum first.
A very little amount of brownish stuff. Turbinado sugar, evaporated directly from cane juice, is very pale brown and tastes close to refined sugar.
Valuable nutrients? In sugarcane juice? Can you name some?
Once most of the sugar is crystallised out of sugarcane juice the remainder is sold as black strap molasses. It is very high in nutients, one tablespoon has approx. 20% of the daily requirement of calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron.

To you, perhaps, not me.
Than what? Certainly not any other sugar. It's the calories (in excess) that is unhealthy. Your body makes the equivalent of HFCS from ingested sugar (sucrose) in very short order. To be honest, saccharine tastes better to me, but it's amazing what one can get used to :) jack

Australians generally mean sucrose when they say sugar (Macquarie Dictionary).
Taste is very subjective. As I mentioned in another post, I, unusually perhaps, prefer saccharine to other sweeteners. jack

That's an expression. The "poison" referred to is the harm. Excess calories certainly can do you harm
Not sure what this means, but sucrose is a disaccharide made up of the two simple sugars glucose and fructose in equimolecular proportion. The body breaks sucrose down to these simple constituents rather quickly. Fruit juices contain very roughly ~10% of sugars which coincidentally is much the same as soft drinks like coke. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is very roughly an equal proportion of glucose and fructose. Much the same as honey. BTW, fructose is just "a" sugar in fruits, not the only one, in case this is what your code means above.
And how does this matter? Do you know what all the people in the world are in the habit of drinking?
Is this the stuff that they are putting into this product? The brownish stuff contains many micronutrients, BTW
Potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, antioxidants, various vitamins. You could look it up. I have, in the past, so have little motivation to do it again :)
So can you show evidence of one individual who can live indefinitely on a daily multivitamin tablet, 25g of essential amino acids, a few miligrams of the essential fatty acids and water, ad libitum? An Indian fakir, perhaps? :)
No, sorry, energy is absolutely essential for animals. I know of none that can photosynthesise, and even then, plants need light energy. Carbon dioxide is also essential to them for growth. jack
