has backlit EL strips which would be about the size for a handheld game. Check them out.
Sig: Say no to fixed width HTML tables. They look terrible in most browsers.
LEDs emit light so no backlight is necessary.
You can try illuminating the edge of the LCD with an LED. The light will likely not be even enough but may be satisfactory. Several LEDs would help.

if it's LCD you could try shining some LEDs into the edges.
if that doesn't work well enough you've gpt problems
