Can anyone advise a good beginners ebook on electronics please ?
There are two paths you can take - ideally, you would pursue both of them, in parallel.
Path one is to study and learn the theory. Horowitz and Hill's "Art of Electronics", 2ed., is probably the introductory book most often cited here, and deserves its reputation. It is a gentle but practical and thorough introduction to basic electronic theory and practice. The Handbook of the Amateur Radio Relay League (a new edition comes out every year, but old ones are still very worthwhile) also contains good introductory material.
Path two is to build electronics projects, starting perhaps with kits and then moving on to projects in books and web sites. To pursue that path, you'll need to figure out what area of electronics you're initially most interested in (radio? audio? music? robotics? home automation?) and then start looking for kits, web sites, books. Obviously there's no way for folks here to make a specific recommendation in that regard without knowing what you're interested in.
It's best to do both paths in parallel: studying theory without the accompaniment of some solder fumes is likely to be boring and not give you much real sense of what's being discussed; building projects without any knowledge of theory will leave you frustrated, unable to make even small modifications and unable to troubleshoot problems.
