anti spam technique?

If you click on several of those spam clothes ads, they all have a similar 'looknfeel' with a live help window floating around. I've send a couple of messages back telling them that its futile to expect to get customers from a newsgroup that has been flooded with spam. A couple of them actually responded live and said 'But the quality is very good'. Some clever web type could write a live help robot that would keep them busy 24-7 and eventually they'd figger out that EEs dont like spam.

I'm using outlook express with a word filter that I made. You just use Tools, Message Rules, News and then make a filter for the subject line that includes all the common words (clothing items, cigars, cigarettes.......) that you see on your list. Then as new messages come in with spam, just add to your filter.

A clever type wouldn't browse Usenet through Google groups.

If you use a real "news" client you can easily set filters so you don't see 99% of the bullshit unless someone replies to it.

I didn't even see your post until Shaun replied to it because I have all Google groups filtered the source for 98% of the spam.

I never respond to spam but I have this bit of idle fantasy: I'd set up an old computer without any vital data in it, format it regularly, never link it with any other computer and never go online with it in the same session as with my other computers. I'd use a disposable email address and make it a target for spammers. Then, when I have nothing better to do, I'd have fun sending naive and/or insulting replies to some of those spammers. But I've never got around to actually doing it - because I always have something better to do.

You can also configure a program called Popfile to act as a stand in proxy with Usenet connections. Elimimates the crap with a bayesian filter.
