I never found anything free to edit PDFs, but Foxit Phantom will do editing, and its relatively cheap.

If you insist on "free", a (painful) alternative is: pdftops --> massage in the psutils suite --> pstopdf

Of course, it's not a WYSIWYG solution... :>

I didn't upgrade my adobe creative suit, and I thought I loaded it on my new laptop. I don't think I've used it yet.

I use PDFCreator as my PDF writer. To view and manipulate PDFs, I use PDF-XChange. The free version won't allow page insertion but it will allow marking and such. I think the full paid version is about $75.

Have a look at PDF Split and Merge:

Look for ghostscript. Its quite easy to concatenate PDFs with it. I guess it can be used for other operations as well.

Pdftk does everything you listed and is free:

PDFCreator now comes with PDF Architect to do the basics of what you describe above (it's also available as a separate download).

Insert, delete, & rotate pages, merge documents...

I find it ironic. I purchased a year or more ago a program called "PDF producer", it clearly stated on the box "Every thing needed to create new, edit existing, add bullets etc".

WHen I installed it, everything went fine however, when it came time for me to create a new PDF file from scratch, I looked high and low for the actual text and document editor in the program. Couldn't find anything close to it. finally after much digging, I then learned that I needed Microsoft Office installed on the machine before a good chunk of the program was even useful. I said what? Sure enough, this program was so limited, the only good thing good about it was that it had a PDF printer in it, then I found out that it was just a freeware one that you can down load off the net.

On top of that, the manual was written by some french person with very poor english document skills.

That was a real waste of money because the machine I wanted it for does not have MS office installed on it for good reason.

Beware of advertised software tools that claim a lot, many of them don't tell you about the other software you need to purchase to get their tinker toy to some useful state.

To edit PDFs pdfcreator works for me too. The PDF exporting capabilities in LibreOffice (formerly OpenOffice) made me ditch completely MSOffice.

But command line. When you're working 70-100 pages of design review, time is money, so I'm stuck with Acrobat until an equivalent comes along that hasn't been "over-featured". ...Jim Thompson
