It looks like you'd need very accurate alignment, which rules out a lot of home jobs.

I could see them being possibly useful for exhibition display type situations where the display stand is precision made and needs frequent rapid assembly/disassembly for transportation.

I'd still take some regular screws and gaffer tape, though.

Based solely on my viewing of Norm Abrams on New Yankee Workshop, it seems serious woodworkers need to have several hundred different clamps on hand.

That's another point. Laminate furniture will stick to cheaper fixings like dowels & cam locks. Medium & high quality wood furniture is not going to be made with unreliable overpriced fixings.
