Windows XP - Caps Lock suddenly comes on for no reason

May 18, 2005 4 Replies

We've experienced a condition where suddenly the Caps Lock suddenly comes on for no apparent reason. When this occurs, the Caps Lock light does not come on but the person typing suddenly sees capital letters appearing. Any Idea what's causing this? Bernie

A pile of papers on the keyboard?

Do the number keys across the top make "~!@#$%^&*()" instead of ""`1234567890"?

I know that you can easily get the shift-lock and shift-lock light out of step with each other by hitting the shift lock while windows is busy. Somewhere in memory, there is obviously a bit for the state of the shift lock and another one for the state the light is to be put into.

If the numbers are shifted, it is a shift key that is doing it.

Do you also lose characters when typing? It could be communication with the keyboard that is at fault.
