How do they compare to Fry's for things like tools + consumables? (Solder, soldering irons, meters, breadboards, etc.)

For emergencies like that, and in the Beaverton area, I usually went to Universal Parts (located on [or just off of] Hall Blvd.) Very reasonable prices and the people there are very knowledgeable about servicing appliances, so I learned things while buying my parts. However, if I knew enough beforehand, to know the exact part I needed or how to figure out if an equivalent would work in its place, and it was urgent as you say I'd probably go check out Norvac. Their NTE product line is exactly for that kind of situation, I suppose.

For parts, Fry's is random. Oddball stuff, empty shelf space, etc. Not necessarily good prices, either. I used to bother, when things were better in the Wilsonville store. But they aren't worth any trouble anymore. I walk though it only when I'm there for some other reason and have an extra moment to take a chance. But even then I'm not all that tempted.

However, your question is well-put. I haven't been to Norvac in so long, that I can't compare them with Frys about things like soldering irons and meters and breadboards. I wouldn't ignore either of them for those items, I suppose. I did buy some soldering iron tips I needed from Frys, not so long ago. I purchased, quite a while back, a Tektronix meter from Frys when it was on sale (under $50 for the "true RMS" DMM916.) I considered that one a bargain and wished I'd bought a few more at the time.
