8th century architectural practice was unaware of the dangers of building a foundation on sand. The building was completely gutted, only the exterior walls remained proppe d up, while they built an interior steel infrastructure patterned after sky scraper construction practices. They had to underpin the foundation by exca vating down an additional 20 feet in depth to reach a suitable base layer.
