Whatzit?

What is the function of the block indicated by red...

Is that label Pi-8?

What does it do? I've not seen such a designator before. ...Jim Thompson

from the datasheet I'm guessing count to 8

I think the pi symbol is just an error, other datasheets show a divide symbol (Obelus)

Yep, Thanks, Lasse!

Surfed on "TOP22 and switch" and found the divide symbol.

So it gets everything powered up with 8 pulses of current, then activates the power switch. ...Jim Thompson

the way I read it; every time the Vc gets below the 4.7V threshold, the Vc must charge/disharge 8 times before the output can start switching again

Looks Russian.

Maybe Vladmir's guys got in there ...

Or it means every 8th cycle, sort of a dvidider function.

No. It is an 8 bit COLUMNator!

Bwuahahahaha!

Looks like a DEC vt100 character, first row...

Looks like the op amp is a "dual integrator"

Maybe it is a "parallel" indicator. (calculus symbols)

It is there to confuse folks like you who have no capacity to search the net.

The TOP circuits look pretty simple on the datasheets, but even a minimal real-world design has lots of parts, and there are a surprising number of important issues.

We have a detailed 8-page teardown and evaluation of a commercial offline module (Astrodyne OFM-1501), please see AoE III, page 665-672. It's well worth the read.

BTW, AoE Chapter 9 is free on the web, so take a look:

I've corrected the errors in this 1st-printing version.

I experimented with the DropBox link. It didn't work unless I selected from the drop-down Open menu, either "Open in Adobe Acrobat" or "Show in Windows Explorer".

I think it's just overloaded. It took me a couple of passes (and patience) before I saved it via Foxit PhantomPDF. ...Jim Thompson
