If it's just the IR thing wouldn't it be simple enough to scope it and figure it out?  I mean do they do anything with the IR signal beyond simple modulation?-- Reply in group, but if emailing add one morezero, and remove the last word.

Maybe the '9603' is third week of 1996; if that isn't far off the age of the gadget, Microchip's popular PIC16C54/CR54/C84 etc. is likely. Vdd on pin 14, Vcc on pin 5, and pin 4 is the reset.

Cryptic numbering might mean a factory-programmed proprietary software, of course, and readout of the ROM contents might be complicated by the security bit feature.
