We run XP on HP ProLiant "server" boxes, all identical (we've bought

15 or so) with hot-plug RAID drives. That setup is about as solid as anything Microsoft-related gets. I'll wait a few years before considering Windows 7... try it on a throw-away laptop first maybe.

An OS should be like a hammer. Boring. Undramatic. Simple. Reliable.

A year (backwards) doesn't make a difference. Altera crappy I/Os weren't fixable. Xilinx software was easily fixed by using Synplify.

Linux may be an alternative at that point. Lets face it: if you want to run XP software you'll need something like a virtual machine to run it on Win7. So why not run XP in a virtual machine on Linux? Engineering software is always behind and upgrading is costly so WinXP compatibility is required for several years.

I've used an NE555 as a crude PWM controller on several occasions. Going from -48V to +140V was the most extreme.

I dunno about 'crappy I/O', but Synplify is not free. Xilinx could not even be bought, lost of vaporware, expensive too.

I had no problems, at least after they got the Virtex line out (they bought the company I was going to use and killed that product). Do you want to do the job? Here's the cost.

If you do not NEED the advanced silicon, why choose it ? It's nicknamed the bleeding edge for a reason..

One of the more unusual applications was worked out in a thread here, where the OP asked for a way to get more audio output from a passive buzzer and the solution was to use two cross-coupled 555's with their outputs in bridge mode across the transducer. Clever. :-) And kudos back from the OP, BTW. JF

Because manufacturers have a tendency to start cranking up the price of the older lines within a couple of years of coming out with the new lines?

Some manufacturers are far better than others in this respect, though.

Spartan isn't the bleeding edge line anyway -- Virtex is.

That cheap eMachines 733MHz computer lasted longer than any other off the shelf computer I've owned. I got a bunch of the Dells like you replaced with your current HPs. They die like fruitflies. :( The longest I've been able to keep one working was about six months. :( The drives, power supplies & motherboards are dying like dimbulb''s chances of being civil.

perhaps if you would describe the issues you are having you could get a solution from the group. We have been using Spartan 6 with DDR without any problems. Try starting with the code the BSB generates for the SP605. When new devices are released the initial support is always buggy ....

Yeah, I agree about NuHorizons. Now Avnet can abuse the crap out of us without any consequences. My FMC boards are still on a 8 week backorder, even though xilinx has them in stock ...

I don't care what they say about 555's , I find them one of the most versatile devices out there.

They're great for the basic timer functions of various configurations along with being used for RS FF/latch, schmitt trigger, Power monitoring etc... The list goes on!

I haven't had, or heard of any problems with Altera devices (at least wrt adhering to the the data sheets).

Sorry, I'm not going to run an exe file when there's no 'readme' or anything else to hint at what it does.

Software can be good and tight and reliable if it doesn't a lot of bloated Windows stuff. Our parts data/inventory/parts list program compiles to 414K and runs blindingly fast.

It's a "console" application that runs under Windows, sort of like a Dos box. One can knock out useful engineering apps in minutes if you don't have to do the Windows nonsense.

5V/3.3V only. I needed more like 1.2V, though could get away with 1.5V (Virtex I/Os worked at 1.2V anyway). Altera's were slow, too (if you couldn't infer that by the 5V capability).

They were broken as designed.
