This was of some invaluable use to me, today:

No idea what its total capabilities are (and no idea to learn about the technology to that extent).

Run in a sandbox/jail as I can't vouch for it's integrity.

For those not willing to download a 4GB RAR file from a drive-by link to a Russian website, it appears to be this:

which you can read via a translation of the Russian:

A production tool for working with USB flash drives, and in rare cases, USB card readers, on Silicon Motion controllers , SMI SM32X and SM34X series (for example SM340AB ).

It will help solve such problems as:

- repairing flash drives;

- changing VID, PID, vendor information, etc.;

- industrial production;

- flashing to various modes, including CDROM, Security, Write-Protect;

- debugging the device in real time

- and much more. </quote>

It's a 4 *MEGA* byte file. And, you shouldn't trust ANY links or external content, regardless.

And sorting out what it can do (and how to do so) will likely take you more time READING than it would to just PLAY with it.

[There are many such tools as the internals of the drives differ so pick one and hope for the best.]

What is it?

Sorry, this is nonsense. There are thousends (if not hundreds of thousends) tools which one can fetch from the internet. Random tool, even if judged good by some compentent person in unlikely to do something useful to me (or any fixed person). It is essential to do filtering, that is before trying you need to have resonable hope that tool is doing what you want. And for that description is essential.

Of course, one need to add to reading time time spent on following links, or in this case looking at follow up messages. For that reason such short description should be in the first post (that is in your initial post).

Sorry, it downloads so slowly that I misread the size as GB. (I'm getting 40Kbyte/sec now, and I'm sure it was slower before)

Isn't it only relevant if you have a flash drive with that particular chip on it? I don't know how prevalent that one is, but seems it'll be pot luck finding one that works with a particular drive you happen to have.
