How's the neon model coming along? Does it behave anything like a real NE-2 yet?
The outer blob is epoxy encapsulant, which sits on a glass layer, which seals the resistive ceramic element. Thick film is something on the order of 100um thickness, so it's not like anything you're going to be able to eyeball.
Vishay brags about "sand trimming" as being superior to laser trimming, something about hot spots and non-uniformities.
I couldn't see any sign of laser cutting. It did look like one corner had been sanded... but we could have done that when removing the plastic.

At Dickson, we did all of our trimming of thick film with automated sand blasters, even trimmed active filters. Laser trimming was only used with the thin film components.
It could well be that your component was _not_ trimmed. How was the resistor spec'd? ...Jim Thompson
Yup, it's only a 5% resistor.
