So, it doesn't comply with standard siting for a thermometer to be recorded for inclusion with weather monitoring. Those, are in a shade box at least twice the distance from nearby buildings as the buildings are high.

The box is to be 1.25m from ground, door facing North (no direct sun when it's open) and in the open (no shade).

Don't get John Larkin started. He gets most of his climate mis-information from Anthony Watts' denialist web-site, which used to include a diatribe ab out painting Stephenson screens with regular white emulsion paint, rather t han white-washing them (which is what Stevenson did).

Do you guys have insulation in your homes?

Central heating?

More people die in cold snaps than heat waves...

Here in Vancouver, BC (just under 1000 miles due north via I-5) it is around 34F, with lows around 25F - which is considered a cold snap hereabouts.

I hope you can keep warm!

John

Relatively new house (3-years), insulated extremely well... electric bills running ~1/3 of those at previous house (built in 1994).

Well, sure.

By some factor. Let's hope this nice warm interglacial lasts a while longer. There are lots of rocks around here that were scraped flat by glaciers 10 or 20K years ago. The Donner Party got hit by the tail end of the Little Ice Age.

Vancouver is probably like San Francisco, mild and cool most of the time. You get more rain.

Yeah, the cabin up here is snug. If the power failed, we could run the gas stove and burn wood. Or check into the Ritz-Carlton maybe.

I can't imagine what it was like here in 1846, tramping around for miles in leather boots and sheepskins. Covered wagons without heated seats.

Bah Humbug! I lived in Phx and Tuc Az for over 40 years And have been close to heat stroke many times. So I think I know what hot is. I now have lived in the Portland OR area for close to 20 years and I would not trade this climate for AZ. In the heat there are only so many clothes you can remove. Cold may be uncomfortable but you can always add more clothes in the cold. Art

We only have a few humid days a year... whereas, in Florida, you can't walk 20 feet from your car before being sweat-soaked :-(

I've been here coming up on 55 years, from West Virginia via Massachusetts. I wouldn't live anywhere else.

I think heat-tolerance is genetic (as is cold-intolerance :)... I was quite comfortable wearing a wind-breaker yesterday.

Portland is where you go to RUST ;-) ...Jim Thompson

troke many times. So I

d not trade this climate

.

I once thought that. You can acclimate to heat. By avoiding air condition ing completely, staying thin, and not eating in the heat of the day, I got to where I could go long-distance running comfortably in the heat of New Orleans' summer. Didn't need or miss air conditioning, when others were sweltering miserably.

And you can adapt to cold, to some extent. I was able to go a winter in Germany--going skiing, standing outside in the snow, etc.--without wearing a jacket once. I've been in -40F many times, and colder here and there.

But, on balance, if it's too hot, you're uncomfortable. As long as there's water, you're fine.

And if it's too cold for too long, you die.

I'll take the heat.

Cheers, James Arthur

I grew up in New Orleans, and I was skinny, but I never could stand the climate. I'd overheat violently after exercize in August. I couldn't sleep without a/c. Different chemistry. To me, San Francisco is usually tee shirt weather, and skiing at +20F is comfy.

I like the medium!

Climate modelling (which John Larkin refuses to take seriously) make it clear that this interglacial isn't going to end while the atmospheric CO2 levels are at or above 400ppm.

The Little Ice Age was a regional effect, rather than an aspect of global heating or cooling. You can treat ocean currents moving heat from west to east as part of climate change but they don't have much effect on the average global temperature.

Mug? That stuff was disgusting! It was sold on base at Ft. Greeley, AK. It was canned in Seattle. You could smell the sulfur when you opened a can. I still get sick, just thinking about it, and that was over 40 years ago.
