signal generator impedance

I have a signal generator with its output BNC labelled 50onms. What does it mean? Does it mean it has pure resistive 50ohms source impedance ? or Does it mean i have to terminate the coax i use with

50ohms from where i tap the signal?

Think of your signal generator as a perfect zero impedance AC source with a perfect 50 ohm resistor in series. If you don't terminate it with 50 ohms, the voltage indicated on the generator will be half that actually delivered to a perfect infinite impedance load. The coax should be 50 ohms as well. You might notice ringing in square waves without the matched coax and load.
