Spacecraft get a lot of SWOOSH-BANG-PHOOMP, too. BGAs seem to survive OK. They're a *lot* better than QFNs, unless your CM is incompetent.

They're not even new-fangled, anymore. They've been around for forty years (or more) and seem to have passed others' tests.

Those were all improvements in robustness [*]. BGA went in the other direction and I don't want to go in that direction. A flexing FR-4 board connected to something with the compliance of a rock via solder balls has IMHO never been a good idea. Flex-board is different but only if the solder joints can be inspected.

[*] With the exception of ESD to which tubes are nearly immune. Which is why I replaced the active element in a roof-mounted preamp with a tube after the umpteenth transistor replacement and after I almost slid down on a mossy section of that roof.

Well, so far we've had zero BGA failures. But our gear doesn't get shocked or vibrated much. We have had a few gull-wing failures.

I knew two guys who died working on antennas. One fell off an antenna tower on an offshore rig, off the coast of Africa, installing supervisory control gear that I designed. A year or so later, his younger brother was putting up a ham antenna on his roof and hit a power line.

You obviously believe that but it's not true. BGAs are a huge advance.

Even relays have their use. ;-)
