KD5YI's post got me thinking... By a strict interpretation of the HOA rules, neither fireflies nor the Aurora Borealis would be permissible. Lightning either for that matter. :)

I dislike lamps that shine in your eyes. Lamps are for illuminating objects or the ground and don't need to shine in your eyes.
Years ago we moved into a neighborhood that had no street lamps. It was explained that it wasn't necessary as everybody had lamps, and those lamps used to be used much of the time. Every third house, it seemed, also had a gas lamp in the front yard. Now everything gets pretty dark. With the new energy efficient lamps, we can afford to illuminate our property that isn't protected by guards, but people still like to keep things dark. I noticed my new street was a lot brighter at night after a woman was attacked in her home during the day, pretty close to my house. It made the Pittsburgh news. I keep a CFL on all the time in the front yard. It mostly shines down.

I put an automatic light with PIR sensor in front of the house. It is nice and helps people... who park their car on my property :-) But now they also added new street lights.
