What would you use the 6AU6 for? Tubes are usually way more expensive than their solid-state equivalents.

The diodes are very nice, but the fets aren't. They're like tubes, in that they have low Gm, high pinchoff voltages, and are hard to drive.
But the GaN fets are amazing.

Take a look at OnSemi's GigaLogic parts. Also, Analog Devices has/have (depending on your pondian) some ecl analog comparators with output edge rates of 35-40 ps.
Direct Digital Synthesis, cheap chips that will generate a sine wave from millihertz to many MHz with precision. Analog Devices.

What, tortise robots? Honey flow metering gauges? Glass sag sensors?
John
Yeah and the design won't go obsolete in the next ten minutes.
My last job before my final retirement was supervising a group in a Components Engineering department at Raytheon. I had more guys dedicated to solving obsolete parts issues than I had writing specs and supporting new designs.
Try telling Procurement that you need a lifetime buy, when they still believe in just-in-time. [g]
Jeezes I'm glad I got out of there before RoHS came along. Reduction of ODCs and VOCs were plenty enough grief for any one person.
Any idea where to grab a reliable oscillator for 8 GHz ?
12AT7, 12AU7, 12AX7. RF, Switching, and Hi-fi. ;-)
Cheers! Rich
The 2N7000 is ancient. But if you define some sort of fast-switching figure of merit, like maybe RdsOn * Cg or maybe Id/Cg, there's really nothing around that's much better, at least if it's made of silicon.

Hello Jim,
Well, it doesn't have to be this tube. I was lucky to obtain a small NOS stash of long-lifetime tubes. Where I used them? For example in an active antenna on a roof. No matter what kind of protection there was all it took was a few serious thunderstorms and the thing went silent. One time when I wanted to check the protection diodes they were gone. Vaporized. Crud and solder splatters everywhere. With the tube it never happened again. No more inching my way up a rain-slickened roof with the spare amp board and a tool box.
You can destroy the grid of a tube but it takes a whole lot more gusto to do that.

Hello Rich,
When it comes to dual triodes I am partial to the ECC81. Grew up with it.

Yep, that's what I used in my amplifier front-ends.

Hello Jim,
It has an incredible useful dynamic range. My favorite brand was Valvo (now Philips).

Hello John,
I am still designing in tons of them. BSS123 but it's basically the same thing.

Pulling thoughts from an OLD brain... 5150 something or other, low noise ??

Hello Jim,
The Peavey amp? Did you play E-guitar in your wild days?
My apps with that tube were all RF. More than one tube had to survive episodes of bright orange plate glow. Never got into audio much since I cannot play any instruments.
-- Regards, Joerg http://www.analogconsultants.com
Played clarinet in orchestra, marching band and a jazz band in high school, but no E-guitar.
We requested no flowers for Duane, instead recommending contributions to the granddaughter's education fund. One donor, a well-known band leader in this town, donated a E-guitar worth about $4K BEFORE the whole band autographed it!
I actually did some near A-biased push-pull tube amplifiers... bias set-point determination by plate glow ;-)

Hello Jim
That is a good way to honor someone who has passed on, by making sure his family is supported. Even when they already had support.
Did Duane ever fire up that 1100HP engine in his Mustang? I wonder what it'll take from 0-60mph, assuming there is a spare set of tires in the garage.
I built a mean amp out of a bunch of color TV horizontal deflection tubes. The main problem was rewinding the speaker coil for a somewhat proper impedance, and to make sure nobody ever touched the wires going there. Probably would have been easier to make a transformer but we were just kids back then. The tubes ran off 900V DC and with a good twang on the guitar you could trip the 230V/16A mains breaker. The electrolytics on that supply alone needed the volume of a shoe box. This thing could really make the rafters shake.

JL posted a photo of an 833 a while back. IIRC the filament radiation alone was enough to heat the plate to a dull glow.
Gee, come to think of it, they would probably make nice audio amplifiers for rich folks:) Regards,
Mike Monett
No it's still specially machined parts in boxes. Since money was owed for the OEM car we've decided to simply buy it and part it out through the father's-in-law Internet parts business.
In my crazier experiments I did one that was 8 2A3's in parallel ;-)
