We haven't had a lot of interference, here in San Francisco. We're across the street from the Building Inspection Department and four blocks from City Hall.

The fire department inspects us once every year or two and checks the fire extinguishers and tests the alarm system. The State Disability folks check our paperwork every couple of years... no problems so far. No hassle about bathrooms or posters or other nuisance stuff. Of course, state and fed taxes are horrible.

Graffiti is a nuisance. The city writes us up if there stuff on our building. We'll get a fine if we don't paint it over within something like 60 days after the notice, which is silly since we get tagged a couple of times a week. Of course, nobody arrests the taggers, because if they do the judges dismiss them.

I don't blame companies who "offshore" their manufacturing to Alabama or Mexico. That would export a lot of expensive problems.

Some public canings of taggers -- as, e.g., Singapore does -- might significantly reduce the problem. :-)

If you're getting tagged regularly, I guess you just have a regular (e.g., monthly) schedule for re-painting? :-(

It took us over four (!) years to get a building permit for a new educational building at our church. Despite the fact that this includes a ball field open to the public and gets kids off the streets and out of trouble. Without one penny of public money, all paid for by our congregation. This is ridiculous. I've once read a bumper sticker saying "Make welfare as hard to get as a building permit" and I must say I'd be in support of that by now.

Yeah. Payroll tax is around 1.5% here, 0.63% in Nevada. Income tax is about 10% here, 0% in Nevada. So that alone makes it >10% more expensive to do business.

When do you guys fire those judges? After one of those kids has committed murder? Something's out of whack there, seriously ...

Actually, sometimes I am thinking about Alabama. A business friend who is thinking about the same said the Huntsville area is pretty nice.

Larkin is a victim of Californication. Here, in Phoenix, the city responds to tagger complaints within 24 hours, carrying paint color matching equipment, then sprays the right color right then and there.

Their tagger policy is a lot like mine with NymNuts, provide no forum by snuffing immediately.

Too many repeats, they hang concealed cameras; then the s*it-heads spend time in tent city, pink underwear and pink bologna sandwiches... that'll cure you of just about any vice ;-)

I know, my wife sure would not like those. We'd almost have to build our own house there, the way they do it in Europe where houses don't just fly away.

Yeah, it's bizarre that the victim (John's company) is legally required to repair the damage (or presumably face fines) whereas the perpetrators just get a slap on the wrist... if anything at all.

Phoenix seems to have a much smarter approach.

The main problem is space. My current grand chateau is about 2200 square feet, not counting the garage under the bedrooms, on a very nice half acre lot. We'll have five of us here over the summer...maximum configuration is going to be one optical breadboard, one rack, and two workbenches. I just spent $1400 on a really nice drawer cabinet (as I said on another thread) to hold most of my junk so that I can get at it.

If one or two more gigs come in soonish I'll go ahead and get the fancy bench and a spectrum analyzer. I can buy quite a bit of nice furniture and equipment for the price of a year's office space rental.

Joe Arpaio sure does have a smarter approach. Without any kind of meaningful punishment those kids will only do one thing: Become worse, committing ever more serious offenses.

But the waitresses in restaurants have German accents... no kidding, I thought I'd die of laughter when a waitress told me, with a German accent, "Now eat your grits, Honey" ;-)

I paid $100 for a 20+ year old tool drawer cart for the heavy stuff, and something like $300-400 for a huge Ikea version in the lab. Plus around $150 or so for lot of small bin racks, total of about 400 bins, for parts.

I bought most of the big ticket office and lab furniture used. That way I got super heavy quality stuff. For example this desk where I am sitting right now:

During the remodel my wife and I tried to lift the left section with the metal undercabinet already removed. Not a slim chance. Too heavy, I had to take it all apart. I am sure it'll survive me.

This economy is the real opportunity for good deals. Nothing beats a nice spacious office desk for the heavy thinking phases of projects.

That's because of operation paperclip and the sauerkraut hill. Probably most folks there are now 2nd and 3rd generation and the accent might be from childhood when their parents spoke German around the house. Nice desk. I'm with you--I buy everything used if I possibly can--refurb computers especially. I have four Ikea bookcases full of books, binders, and databooks, plus two more with instruments and gizmos.

Yep. Assuming that the house isn't in a complete uproar, as mine is quite frequently when everyone's around. At that point, a nice table in the public library is generally best. (It's generally a quite pleasant uproar, but still not conducive to steady thinking.)
