In this specific case he did, but I don't recall, if I ever knew. I didn't know the family. This sort of thing isn't rare though (by teens, I meant teen suicide).

No, it's not surprising at all. Religious people tend to be happier, all around, and have a higher self-worth. There is something to be said for believing in something greater than yourself. ...and I'm back to "selfish".

Correlation does not imply causation. Suicide rates are higher in = _arctic_ countries. This includes Alaska, which I suppose is more = religious than Sweden.

Though, if you can show a correlation between religiousness and = lattitude, you might still have something. :)

Having lived in IL, NY, VT, OH, and now AL, I think I can make that correlation. I didn't see prayers in the men's room at previous jobs. ;-)

AFAIR it's well over 10 per 100k in Australia, a rather secular country and not exactly arctic. Belgium stuck out as a rather sad case, only

1/3rd of the population religious and >20 per 100k :-(

I think there is some but I can't prove it :-)

The suicide rate in places like Montana and Idaho is supposedly quite high. I read an article about it and it said that many of the people in these places are fiercely independent and loners and when they get unhealthy they cannot stand the thought of being taken care of by somebody else.

Yes, that's still the old cowboy metality or as Jim calls it, "self-dispatch". Probably not very religious people, else they wouldn't do it unless mentally disturbed or in agonizing pain.

Yep, Some of the "mentally disturbed" lurkers here should think about "self-dispatch" ;-) ...Jim Thompson

I think it has to do with feeling powerless... like when a socialist takes over your country... what is our present suicide rate after Obama-nation? ...Jim Thompson

The Swedes are probably rather more particular about recording suicides as suicides. In Catholic countries suicides can't be buried in consecrated ground, and "suspect" deaths are less likely to be recorded as suicides. I imagine that bribes do get paid some of the time.

The major research institution isn't going to a case by case check on every death - they will record whjat got written into the public record -usually by a doctor who knew the whole family well ...

I can't imagine an entity such as Gallup taking such an easy road. But of course I am not 100% sure.

And why is the rate so high in Belgium, around 20 per 100k?

Why? Have you ever been to Alaska? I lived there for a year in the '70s. The 'town' outside the gates of the small base I was stationed at consisted of a general store, two bars and a police department. I didn't see any church.

Only two bars? It must have been a very small place. ;-)
