OT: Somali Pirates

It *is* reality. Didn't your mommy teach you that a few always spoil the fun for everyone else? ...and reality doesn't much care how you feel about it.

Well, aside from the fact that if the weapons are there for terrorist activities it is unlikely that they would be legal, the fact is that, yes, any weapons kept by a belligerent represent a danger. There is no guarantee that they will be kept inaccessible.

This is, unfortuantely, true to some extent. There is still a fundamental difference that those major news networks have a *charter* to try to provide "balanced" news -- even if they don't succeed particularly well in that endeavor -- whereas the *charter* of Rush and Stewart is to *entertain* people (also something that they may not succeed in particularly well at times :-) ).

Agreed, and I'm not really a big supporter of "fairness doctrines" that attempt to completely replace public opinion's influence on what we hear on the radio or TV with straight-down-the-middle 50/50 liberal/conservative "equal time" laws: There does need to be some balance, certainly, but you absolutely need to let the public decide that, well, if they think Rush Limbaugh is a lot more interesting to listen to than Al Franken (and apparently the public does...), Rush certainly should get a bit more time based simply on his sponsors' ability and williness to pay for it.

I think there's plenty of that on both sides -- although interestingly you actually get less of it with the well-known names like Rush and Stewart than the smaller guys.

I've been calling for it for years, regardless of who was in office.

This is similar to what happens in the middle east: Liberals beat up on Bush and friends for 8 years, so now conservatives beat up on Obama and friends for

4 or 8 :-) years, then liberals will go back to beating up on the next guy the conservatives manage to get into office, etc. When does it end? One party of the other has to decide that they're going to forget about the past and try to just move forward on the premise that their opponents are generally reasonable people, despite strong disagreements on various policy points. Otherwise we get nowhere, and better yet... the party that decides to do this tends to come out looking better long-term. Why not make that party the Republicans?

That's a good point -- having no clear majority does make everything a lot harder.

Strictly speaking I agree, but for every new "truth" one might discover about a political party, there are 10 or 100 opinions that pop up on blogs/web sites/e-mail/tweets/etc. that try to distort that truth.

The problem is that people tend to extrapolate to ridiculous extremes: Yes, democrats are certanily more socialistic than republicans, but I think you can count on one hand how many of them really want the U.S. to end up like China or Cuba. Similarly, republicans are generally more militaristic than democrats, but you can also count on one hand how many want to end up like Libya or Niger.

OK, but what country doesn't heavily restrict the rights of foreigners?

The U.S. is likely one of the least restrictive countries there is when it comes to what non-citizens are legally permitted to do while they're on our soil or in our waters.

I think you're trying to minimalize it.

Again,I think Joel is trying to minimalize it. "pshaw, they aren't THAT bad..."

Yeah,Obama really put forth an effort to compromise.... In actuality,he just ignored them and put on some theater for the public.

Republicans compromised often, and all it got them was demands for more compromise, but no compromise from the DemocRATs.

But there comes a point where you HAVE to say "NO MORE". Certain things are not negotiable, like the Constitution. Now we have DemocRAT Congresspeople saying they don't care what the Constitution says. IMO,that is a violation of their oath of office, and treason.

Heck, they have a supermajority and they still couldn't get healthcare passed without buying off Blue Dog DemocRATs. (who showed their ethics,or lack of same)

that oughta tell ya there's something wrong.

Or maybe they are just asking the tough questions that others are afraid to ask. Heck, even the National Enquirer got one right;on John Edwards.

One thing for certain; if the Leftist MSM had given Presidential-candidate Obama the same depth of scrutiny that they gave VICE Presidental-candidate Sarah Palin(and her family),Obama would never have become POTUS.

and I want to know why Comrade Obama has concealed all of his records. what is he hiding?

Not necessarily. there's plenty of examples in recent history of leftist policies gone REALLY bad. And it can begin one small step at a time,or one big step. And we are now just beginning to see the extent of Obama's "redistribution of wealth".

It may not be that they -want- the US to end up like Zimbabwe(Rhodesia used to be the most prosperous nation on the continent, the breadbasket of Africa),but they keep on doing the same things over and expecting different results,or believe that socialism just "hasn't been done right yet",and that they're the ones to do it "right". It REALLY irks me that they keep on saying "well,Europe does this...",when we expressly set out to NOT be like Europe. If they like European nations so much, they can move there, they don't have to drag the rest of us along with their madness.

Oh,and explain why so many of Obama's close advisors and friends are admirers of Mao,Che and other Communists.Or outright terrorists like Ayers and Dohrn. Just try and tell us how they are not close to Obama.Ayers wrote the preface to one of Obama's books, held a meet and greet for Obama at his house, and they worked closely on boards.Would you ask some barely known guy to write the preface for your self-bio?

Obama has told SO many lies, big ones, and yet the DemoCRATS/"progressives" make excuses or ignore them, even though they said they wanted ethics in the new administration.

Look at California for a place run by the leftist DemocRATs; It USED to be a prosperous state, now it's a mess. that is what they want to bring the rest of the country to.] Or Massachusetts and their healthcare.Or Oregon's HC. They all are in serious trouble.

Nah,just shoot enough of the top cadres and the rest will crawl back into obscurity. But we also need to clean up the education system, get all the "progressives" away from our young before they teach them to become commies.

I've recently read O'Reilly's "Bold Fresh...", Palin's "Going Rogue" (really sharp woman, my kind of babe :-), and Kagan's "The Return of History and the End of Dreams"; and Levin's "Liberty and Tyranny" is in the queue.

I also bought the complete set of Ayn Rand... for a re-read... last read in the late '60's :-)

All very depressing... unless you believe we can actually overturn this bastard.

Unfortunately, I fear the "tea party" movement will split conservative votes and the commies will rule forever :-(

I'm very depressed. Knowing too much history can make you that way :-(

For comic relief, if it appears in a movie theater near you, go see "The Bold Fresh Tour" (Beck and O'Reilly). Besides being a good show, we were amazed at the full house and the number of 30- and

40-something's in the audience (at $18/head)... and deluded ourselves with visions that they'll actually go forth and do something :-( ...Jim Thompson

OK, but certainly you'd agree that Fox tilts towards the right and MSNBC tilts towards the left, yes? And that this is well-known?

I agree it's a problem, I just don't really know what to do about it -- and I'm not convinced that reinstating the "fairness doctrine" is the answer either.

In this case I'm tryining to minimize it because I don't think it adds much of anything in trying to run the country, whereas it does suck up enormous resources primarily in terms of people's time.

Having pushed through healthcare- (or perhaps more accurately as James Arthur suggest, insurance-) reform, he's going to have to start doing a lot of compromising if he expects to get much of anything done in the next three years. That reform really was Obama's issue where he felt he had to say, "NO MORE," I suppose.

And that's fine -- I have zero problems with people taking very strong stances on issues they believe in. If you hold a particular position and there's nothing I can manage to offer you to get you to compromise from it, that's my problem and doesn't reflect negatively on you at all.

You'd think so, wouldn't you? :-)

Understandable, but it's been going on for so long (many decades) that at this point republicans are arguably complicit in it.

I don't think he's hiding anything, but unfortunately there's no way to prove a negative like that: Claim that he hasn't produced a birth certifcate? OK, so he produces one. Claim that it isn't forged? OK, the issuing state acknowledges it's official. Claim that the state officials are in cahoots with Obama? -- It just goes on and on without end...

Fine, so you try to start kicking overly-liberal house and senate members out in another 5 months here, and kick out Obama in another two-and-a-half years. Surely the U.S. is strong enough to withstand a few years of "unexpected consequences" if it really is as bad as you suggest? If the people keep electing democrats into office as the majority year after year, at some point you do have to take a look at the results and, if it's just rubbing you raw, seriously take a look at the alternatives such as leaving the country like Jim is. I don't personally think it's nearly that bad, but of course everyone judges that for himself.

That was over 200 years ago though? Both Europe and the U.S. have changed a lot in the meanwhile?

They aren't bad people, they just made bad decisions? Just try and tell us how they are not close to Obama.Ayers wrote the

No. Clearly Obama and Ayers are close; Obama "officially" tends to hold him at a bit of a distance because obviously it looks bad politically (and I fully expect Ayers is OK with that) -- personally I think Obama believes in what Ayers stood for and (as many generally liberal people would) accepts that Ayers went about expressing his beliefs in a very mistaken fashion some 40+ years ago now, but that he's matured and regrets those actions.

Heck Jim, if you told me that 40+ years ago you had gone and blown up the VW mini-bus used by some hippies who were off protesting the Vietnam war -- but had kept your nose clean for decades afterwards -- I'd be OK with you too.

Granted, it's often a tough call though -- I had several classes as an undergraduate in Sterling Hall at the University of Wisconsin-Madison which was bombed in 1970

formatting link
and it's a lot harder to find forgiveness for the four guys involved in that bombing when one guy died and several others were injured, even though the perpetrators didn't *think* anyone was there and hence no one would be harmed. The guy who died was finishing up work the day before planning to leave on a family vacation. If that's not awful, I don't know what is... and meanwhile, the oldest of the bombers, after serving seven years in prison, ran a sandwich shop and then a juice cart on campus, just blocks from Sterling Hall... incredible...

Yeah, but look at how many decades it took'em to do it! ;-)

Well, pretty much all the states don't have enough money right now. The smarter ones are cutting back services to copy, spreading the pain around at least, whereas the not-so-smart ones are trying to raise taxes big-time, often targeting the wealthy... which strikes me as a very poor strategy right now.

Another good read is One Second After, by William Forstchen. It's about an EMP attack on the US and it's horrible consequences.
