OT: Kaliphorny-eh?

Captured quote: One of the things that I've also noticed, in the last couple of weeks ? I've been out in California, in wine country ? and my jaw dropped because I was like, "Oh my god, inflation's coming back." Because gasoline out there ? I just paid $3.85 for a gallon, which is $1 more than it is here in Baltimore. Okay? And you ask, "Why? How could that be?"

Well, the deflationary effects of the drop in oil are not being hit in California because of the government craziness and nonsense of the sort of communistic state of California. They have laid on tax after tax after tax. So, there's like an extra ? as of January 1, an extra $0.90 per gallon in taxes out there. It's crazy.

California mandates a special gasoline blend that few refineries care to make. When one blows up or goes out for maintanance, prices spike even higher. And the tax per gallon is high.

We did see a drop from the general drop in oil prices.

On the other hand, the climate is mild so we don't have the enormous heating and cooling bills that you see in, say, Baltimore, where it gets snowy/cold and hot/muggy. I pay maybe $70 a month for gas for my car, and about $130 a month for gas+electricity for our house. That's not bad.

And we do soak the foreigners doing the Napa wine tour. After the first few glasses, they hardly notice the gas prices.

But you guys drive tiny little cars. We could throw a couple of them in the back of a decent SUV, behind the groceries and the soccer team.

you mean tiny little cars like yours?

anyway tiny car doesn't change the price, and those big SUVs probably drive around 99% of the time with one person in it

Yep, mine's a 950cc Citroen Saxo which struggles a bit up hills. It's

When I want to go a distance on holiday, then car rental is inexpensive. Why would I want to own an SUV? Many people here do, mostly it seems to be for the school run.

I'm not a very good consumer.

Mine is tiny. 250 HP, about 20 MPG. 156 MPH top speed, but not with the snow tires.

I would never order a car like that. I got it used from a .com guy who had six cars, then lost his job. Given six cars, it didn't have much mileage on it.

I figure in another year or so, there will be another batch of nice used cars coming onto the market. Lots of Teslas, especially.

There will be *loads* of EVs on the market in a couple of years, independent of the economy. ...but you'll spend a fortune on new batteries.
