Today's Proceedings of the (US) National Academy of Sciences has a rather depressing paper (at least for Americans)

American die younger than people who live in Germany, England and Wales, France, Italy, and Spain. In 2017 the excess mortality was higher than than the number who died in the US from Covid-19 in 2020.

It must be a depressing statistic if you live in the United States of America, and aren't quite as brain-washed as John Doe and Flyguy, though less so if you are rich enough to be able to afford internet access. Poor people getting sick and infecting their richer neighbours is still a problem. The health-wealth gradient is steeper in the US than it in more equal advanced industrial countries, but from a health point of view it's still better to be poor in Spain than it is to be rich in the US.

If someone falls sick etc, it is due to their fault and/or God's punishment.

Yes, I've heard that revolting crap. More frequently I've heard attitudes that would stem from that, but without it being explicitly stated.
