Antidepressants Root Cause of Yet Another Shooting Rampage

Lots of "therapists" involved here, and guns had about as much to do with it as driving a BMW ( he actually did kill a cyclist by ramming him with the BMW, that's how the big hole got in the windshield):

It's a fact that he just started psychiatric "care", and anyone who goes for such care is going to get a diagnosis and medication.

Antidepressants are well known to have the ability to cause awful "start up" effects, in particular "akathisia", which is a sensation of awful internal tension and agitation that can lead some people to suicidal or homicidal actions. Drug manufacturers have been successfully sued for thus side effect, and manufacturers have been required to put black box warnings on medications warning of suicidality.

In addition to start up effects, the SSRI medication class can cause intolerable withdrawal symptoms when people try to stop taking the drugs. Many people decide to keep taking them long-term to avoid the withdrawal symptoms.

Nobody really knows what the medications do long-term. They're approved by the FDA on the basis of 6 week trials, often cherry-picked and manipulated by the manufacturer so they appear more effective than placebo.

Long term, it's likely that the drugs can cause significant structural brain changes, including serotonin receptor down regulation, changes to the locus coeruleus (damage to the fight or flight system) alterations in gene expression, etc.

I wonder if any of this is mentioned to patients who are supposed to be given "informed consent." I doubt it.

It's likely that SSRIs were a contributing factor to many of these shootings, but proving it is nearly impossible. Even in cases where its obvious to any specialist that someone has had severe adverse effects because of psych drugs, getting compensation out of the manufacturers is nearly impossible, as the defense can always attribute any behavior, no matter how uncharacteristic or similar to a known side effect, as a symptom of some underlying mental disorder.

Pharma cares about the "mentally ill" precisely as far as their ability to be customers for pills extends. When it comes to adverse effects, the testimony of the mentally ill means nothing.

Well, even prior to whatever "treatment" he received, it is obvious from his writings and videos that he was quite disturbed. Apparently he was from a fairly affluent family, and he seemed to live in a kindof solipsistic world where all his whims were catered to. There's some stuff in his "manifesto" about how he drunkenly destroyed his bedroom because he didn't win the 150 million jackpot on the lottery one night, a night where he felt he was "destined" to win. He may have been midly autistic as some have claimed.

Unfortunately this solipsism probably had a harsh collision with reality when he went to college and realized the real world didn't owe him anything. ..particularly women who probably found him off-putting.

In hindsight it's probably unfortunate that he went to school in the UCSB area, it's not surprising he didn't do well socially in that kind of atmosphere.

Most of the terrible people I've known (who went to college) were terrible people long before they got there.

He had been treated by "therapists" since he was eight years old.

It's not the pharmaceutical industry, it's the psychiatrists, they're the ones who are supposed to be treating the patient on an individual basis and watching for signs and symptoms of ill-effects.

Between this and psychotropic drugs (not an exclusive set), you cover a large proportion of such attacks in this country. Sorry, I don't believe in coincidences.

It's not the pharmaceutical industry,"

The hell it ain't. they bribe doctors to prescribe their "product" amd also have an ad campaign telling peolle to "ask their prescriber" if their pills are "rigth for them.

What's mmore, they "give" grants to medical schools and influence the curricula therof, as well as texbook content.

Been going on for decades.

I'm not going to waste a bunch of time citing references to convince you, b ut the neuroscientists who specialize in these drugs and studying their eff ects are opposed to the current practices of use. Brain chemistry is perma nently altered and the patients' condition is never cured, only suppressed.

yep yep yep. Fred, you really nailed that one - And here's the kicker: Do you know why the media NEVER mentions SSRI's in connection with these murder- suicides? Because the lame stream media gets big $$$ from pharmaceutical ads, or haven't you noticed? :) And SSRI's are a big $$$ item.

That's why we never hear about it.

I find it interesting that the media and this post describe it as a shootin g rampage, but it started with three being murdered by stabbing, and ended with a vehicular homocide. Nice to know that our rights to have knives and automobiles are not under attack.

Well, on MSNBC a host has floated the idea to confiscate all metal knives a nd give us dull plastic ones instead. Just kidding. Sorta takes the wind out of the assault rifle obsession, doesn't it? I thought the perp used a machete? j

I've just been reading "Spirit Level"

ost_Always_Do_Better

It's written by a pair of epidemiologists, and points out that unequal soci eties, and the US is almost the most unequal that they look at - only Portu gal and Singapore seem to be worse - tend to have very high rates of mental illness, crime and violence.

So the answer may be heavy taxes on the rich and fewer prescriptions for an ti-depressants.

The mechanism hypothesised in the book (and back up with a lot of evidence) is that high levels of inequality show up as large differences in status w ithin society, and a lot stress for everybody. Where status differences are smaller, trust and cooperation are a lot more common, and it's all much ea sier on the psyche. Low status people do suffer more damage, but high statu s people in very unequal societies don't do as well as lower status people in more egalitarian communities.
