OT Anybody seen the articales about the ultra white paint?

Black garbage bags are great, almost transparent. They make rather cheap thermal IR windows.

HDPE is a bit better, but still opaque in sections thicker than a few millimetres.

Black garbage bags are most likely LDPE so it should be similar

The cheaper the better. Really bad bags are about a mil thick.

I can't tell what they are made of, but it's easy to image a situation and see.

Given a matal box with a pcb inside, one can remove a cover and replace it with a bit of garbage bag taped on. The thermal situation doesn't change much but you can image parts on the board.

Has anyone tried clear stuff, like Saran Wrap or something that's visually transparent too? I should try that.

afaik "Saran wrap" is also made of PE now

The five 1 to 1.5 mil thick Kapton shields on the JWST are coated (metallized) and they reflect most of it.

I am going to be so happy when we can celebrate what man has acheived here.

300 events must all fucntion properly though.

LDPE is several times darker than HDPE in the 10-14 nm range. I used

0.5-mil LDPE as the window material for my Footprints sensors.

It behaves very differently from other plastic wrap, though--it doesn't stick to itself nearly so badly, which makes it much easier to handle.

It's pretty funny that you claim I don't understand thermo when you don't understand anything I said. Nothing you have posted refutes anything I said. Nothing. You espouse at length adding a few matters that simply are not a part of the discussion at hand, otherwise simply say the same thing in more words with more detail that isn't particularly important.

You remind me of Bill.

Unmetalized kapton, even thin stuff, is almost black at thermal wavelengths.

To accurately thermal image a shiny thing, stick a bit of kapton tape on it.

target,

surfaces.

Make sure you have no air gaps. We used to take a thin sheet of heat sink media and use it as a blanket over top of a bead thermistor and then kapton to hold it all against the UUT.

The only way to get it closer without losses is to use thermal epoxy on it, then a little nomex blanket and the kapton fixing that down. A pig in a blanket.
