For my own P.A. purposes I use 100v line and try to ensure that no loudspeaker can ever draw more power than is good for it. As this mic was intended for use on someone elses band P.A., where no such rules apply, I take your point.
I have 'solved' the problem by replacing the NE5532 op-amps with TL074s, which die quietly and show no tendency to fart. The worsening of the S/N ratio and distortion figures is of no practical consequence in this application.
