Just like lidar was able to see through the trees of Mexico and find lost cities, this will be able to do the same looking "through" the terra firma.
Nice science, but the article authors don't know what SQUIDs are or how they've been used to decades to find buried minerals. This new sensor senses gravity not magnetism, but it's not new in using quantum devices.
Suppose we had a big cube of concrete with unknown stuff inside. Might be cannon balls, basketballs, marble busts of Groucho Marx. Assume a movable g-sensor, like a scope probe, that measures its point vector g field.
Can we wave that probe around outside the block and image the insides?
