We're really far from doing anything useful with these things if clearing one bit is considered an achievement worthy of a publication.
As for Maxwell's demon, van der Meer's stochastic cooling did more or less exactly that with charged particle beams in a storage ring.

Sounds like more press-release science. There must be hundreds of them per day.
