newbie question - remote sound activation?

What would be necessary to create a simple system that consists of a controller that has a button (or some other type of activating device) that could remotely activate a small speaker - like a wi-fi signal - where the speaker could be located in a house or up to a certain distance away? Basically, a remote control that activates something that creates a beep? I have no electronic background but since this is a fairly common setup I was wondering if someone could point me in a direction as to how to get the parts and some type of instructions on putting something like this together - just someting REALLY simple.

Simple solution:

Take an AM radio and tune it to a frequency where there is no station present. Turn it up to full volume. Place the radio where you wanted the speaker.

Now, where you want the button, plug an electric drill in the wall near where you want the button. Press the button on the drill to activate the speaker.

Very simple. Should work fine.

start with a wireless doorbell, or wireless novelty eg:

Then all you need to do is modify the sound it makes.

Go to Radio Shack and pick up a wireless doorbell.
