New Browser Needed

I don't use any cloud-based software. Well, maybe the occasional online calculator for physics or something, but I don't enter any ID info.

What software do you refer to? All the design stuff that I use runs locally, even if I have no online connection.

Firefox has Reader mode, almost text-mode browsing. It doesn't download anything but the raw HTML and doesn't fetch linked references.

Hello? I put in my two cents worth and offered some help. No response so far...

I still have AOL. Not sure why? $14/mo.

The truly embarassing thing about it is that I've been a customer of theirs since 1978 (according to something they sent me in the mail).

Looking online, I don't think AOL was even around in 1978, so that's a mystery. That said, I've had the same email for something like 37 years! Can that be right?!!

Time to change. And time to quit pissing away $14/mo. Supposedly, you can get AOL for free and still keep your email. I don't know what the tradeoffs are, if any. Maybe they just keep taking my money because I'm stupid enough to still give it to them.

Quick back-of-napkin: $6,200 (but I don't think it was always $14/mo.)

Sorry Robert - been busy. The "new" browser is back to the "" stage, unfortunately. It is an utterly pointless excercise, as many here have pointed out!

That doesn't necessarily mean it shouldn't be done, however. Or does it?

Maybe the trick here is to fully retire and throw this damn computer out the window!?

That's tempting, but I doubt it would work in the long run. To addicted to connectivity, I suppose. :)

I still have 3 customers using AOL. They're used to it, have made it work for them, ignore the constant ads, and won't change. Believe me, I've tried. They're also not the only AOL users left:

"Believe It Or Not, 2.58 Million People Still Pay For AOL Service"

Why are you paying $14/month? If you "bring your own ISP" and not use their dialup or DSL service, it's free: I still have an AOL 1.0 floppy install disk that I'm saving as some kind of collectors item.

"Founded in 1983 as Control Video Corp", but more realistically, 1985. Hint: Don't believe everything you read in your email.

No. Something is wrong with the 1978 date.

I was sending bang path email in the early 1980's as comix.uucp!jeffl until domain addressing arrived in about 1986. I then became snipped-for-privacy@comix.santa-cruz.ca.us until about 1989, when I switched to snipped-for-privacy@cruzio.com. About 30 years total.

Yep, it's free. Services and limitations are listed:

If you feel guilty about giving your money to AOL, you could always change and send your money to the address below.

There is no reason to stay with AOL for any service, even if they PAID you! A fair number of free, decent e-mail providers, and a goodly number of ISPs with decent e-mail that do not charge much(in region of $9.00/mo).
