Need OFF THE SHELF DC-DC converter 100-125 watts 12 in 24V out

Anybody know of a source for a 100 watt 24V output boost converter ? Source is a lead acid battery. Use is to power a class D amp. 24 is is great, higher power is better. Should be small form factor and a bare board is fine. And in these days of 22 week lead times, off the rack and ready to go is important. If the client likes it, it could lead to 100-1000 piece per month sales.

You'll have to ask for the wattage, they seem to have "forgotten" to mention it but it sure looks plenty beefy.

YMMV, but in my experience that sort of volume is a pretty big encouragement to roll your own, unless you just don't do PCB assemblies right now at all.

If your company normally makes welded assemblies or something non- electronic like that then yea, you want to try buying something off the shelf.

Rolling their own even at 1000/month might be iffy. Not enough qty. The link I gave Steve is this:

Steve, I misread, their data is vertical and it says 276W continuous and

700W peak, should be plenty for you. Imagine the tchk ... tchk ... *BOOM* you could produce with 700W peaks, could blast out the rear window :-)

Anyhow, >500 are $83 a piece. I bet at 1000/month they could get that down to under $70, maybe even $65. Even with production in places like Shenzen that will be hard to beat, plus it needs EMC cert and all those other expensive tests which you must amortize, meaning factor it into the cost.

I found that rolling our own at clients only made sense if unavailable, outrageously marked up or qties were >100k/year. None of that would be the case here.

My main concern would be some kids plopping in J.J.Cale "Cocaine" at full blast and after hearing it 3-4 times the car won't crank anymore. Might want to add an UVLO that prevents it from going to the 10V limit or have it customized ;-)

This is one time I was actually looking for Shenzen because of costs and time. I'm in the middle of rolling out a new product, doing the optics, mechanics, and a 80 amp current source, and the boss walks in and wants a quick solution in a different division of the company. And did I mention I was busy repairing the lathe, too? Wants a full engineering proposal and wants it in 6 hours. This was fine and dandy until I learned the custom transducer is fixed at a high resistance, and the source is lead acid, no matter what. "The system we are buying now is XXX$, beat it by 2X, and keep our signature sound quality." The 3 ring binder landed on his desk by close of business, and I did the presentation.

I did the math today for rolling a few for the prototypes, and at

6$ for the chip, and 3.50$ for the inductor, and about 16$ for the low ESR ceramic caps, plus 100-200$ for the board house. That is one off Digikey. Add in the insanity of going through the motions of adapting Eagle's Gerbers to a new house, I decided there had to be a cheap knockoff out there. And I do agree with Tim, if I were better set up I would bang this out myself.

And in a nice twist, its car audio season somewhere because the apps engineers for all the class D chipset makers were out of the office. They all have offices near here, and the one guy on the phones today said he is normally solely assigned to the one of the Big Three, full time. This is one time the sales guys are useful, because they know what is not 22 weeks out. They all said business is up a bit.

The low end car audio guys have this nice 100+ watt unit, made in Shenzen, with beautiful SMD inductors, that is 3-4 mm thick and the size of playing cards. But it has no markings :-( That is what I was hoping to find.

LT has a nice dual phase chipset tailored for this, and TI has a similar solution out, but I'm the only electronics person in a sea of cad guys and mechies, and this is one case that off the shelf can beat doing it in house. We do not make our own boards, and I'm not set up for 32 pin packages with .5 mm spacing. The house that does our manufacturing gets more then I make in a week to be bothered with a SMD one off for a few hours and that clinched it.

I'm waiting for a quote from Powerstream, and they are checking stock. They have a beast that is 37 watts over what I need, and its cost effective for a prototype.

Just don't underestimate the EMC and safety tests. You don't want to have some authority find out years later that it's over the limit and causes interference. I may sound like a hypochondriac here but according to a guy on a German NG that's what happened to a major TV manufacturer, in Europe. They had to eat their plasma TVs. Ouch. I guess some heads must have rolled after that one.

Probably to replenish the stock that was sold under the clunker program. Once that is done they might see business fizzle just like earlier this year.

No markings is usually not a good thing. Not if it goes into cars or the general consumer market.

I've just handed a proto run at AA-PCB. Next week I should know how good a job they did. They do very small qties at a price that I (and a client of mine) thought was reasonable.

Yeah, a nice Hammerhead's Porter would just hit the spot :-)
