It's easy if you only have one or two instruments. Try thirty. It'll sometimes work of you fluff the cables, on the second Tuesday of the month during a month with two full moons.

This was pretty much all HP and Tektronix gear. It sometimes took a star from one stacked 488 connector to each instrument, sometimes a daisy chain worked. The problem was that it was all in series of racks. Recabling it when it decided to be obstinate was a PITA.

None of that. Just lab instruments.

Pretty much all HP and Tek. The only part of it that wasn't Tek or HP, that I can remember was the computer (DEC). Nothing home-brewed at all.

IME that sort of stuff only happens when you ignore the cable length limits.

I'm not exactly sure what the problem is, but any queries to the power supply will return garbage. Using John Miles' Prologix.exe GPIB configuration utility

I think it's about that long ago that he fixed the firmware, but check.

That doesn't sound like a Prologix problem at all. Try to talk to the power supply using Hyperterminal. A GPIB-equipped box should not respond with a barrage of nonsensical data. What happened with mine was that the responses were ok but one bit was stuck. So I always got a time-limited set of data but when deciphering it the information in the data sounded like Swahili.

Sending was never a problem, receiving was because the Prologix threshold sits around 3V and that's way too high for old bipolar TTL. And that's what most vintage gear will have inside.

Once upon a time i put a GPIB interface, a real time clock, and a FDC on a SYM-1 (1 MHz 6502) and got it all working with ROM basic. It was to automatically run a dielectrometer with the sample in a fixture in a temperature chamber, with data logging. I used the MC 68488, and a PIO with the TI line driver chips. Would rather have used either the uPD7210 with the TI drivers or the =46airchild 96488.

Yo, krw, 30 instruments on a single bus?? No wonder you had problems, the bus does not support more than 7 devices on a single bus except under special cases, and never more than 14 on a single bus. The bus is not at fault if you refused to try to use it correctly.

This complaint sounds really weird to me. I suspect that there is a logic flaw in the Prologix software. I think i need to get dialed in with Abdul. Who else can he talk to that implemented GPIB on a micro before?
