In Az? 90 isn't worth the stop for the ticket. The cops want a *real* speeder ;)
Cheers

I had one in a Saturn L300, with four other engineers in there from a client. It became a bit tough to steer but only after we stopped did we realize it was a tire. Then I found it only had one of those teeny temporary spares, plus the hub cap disintegrated just from prying it off by hand :-(
However, at well above 100mph that can be a whole 'nother matter. One guy had a tire shred at 120mph on a big Jaguar in Europe. A very experienced driver but he said it was a close call. Another expert driver wrecked out in a big BMW because the steel pieces flying around jammed a front wheel at close to full speed.

Uuuuuu-wack!
Yeah, Wayne would stay up for two or three days straight, subsisting entirely on coffee and cocaine, and write 4 or 5 klines of PDP-11 assembly code. Then he'd crash for a day or so, wake up, and debug/test it in one more day. His coding philosophy was "never take chances."

Same here. VERY loud noise. Didn't realize it was a tire until almost down to zero speed.
Again same here. I had bought the car from a relative :-( I knew it had crap for tires, but I put it off.
Put the "spare" on and went straight to the tire store and put Michelin's on it.
I don't take chances with tires. I routinely change them out at about
35K miles... always Michelin's highest speed, load and temperature ratings. So I've never had a blowout on a set of tires I bought myself.

That is still not a good reason to be suicidal. I couldn't drive 150 miles, if you held a gun to my head. In fact, 15 miles at once can put me out of commission.

Sounds like Alan Kotok (DEC), in his younger years.

Rationalize all you want, one day you will pay a hefty price for your arrogance, if you don't kill someone first.

Hello Jim,
That's my favorite brand as well. After putting some on my wife's Toyota and noticing the much smoother ride I put Michelin X-Radial LT on the Mitsubishi. Costco has a $60 off sale once in a while (if you buy all four IIRC). A bit too soft in the walls for my taste but they don't have
235 for 15" rims in "truck grade". So I can't inflate over 35lbs :-(The first set (Yokohama) was over 9 years old and I only changed them because of their age. They still had plenty tread after 55k miles and no visible cracking but you never know how the inside looks. Same as you, I don't take chances with tires.

(1) Is there anywhere in PA you can manage to drive over 60? PA Pike maybe? You easterners can't fathom 200 miles of Interstate, all in a straight line, with no cities on it.
(2) I've been driving for 50 years now... never caused an accident. I've been hit from the side 3 times, and had a "blind" person turn left in front of me... all in town, nothing on freeways/interstate.
Once had a car in front of me tap the car in front of him, at about
70MPH on I17. I managed to dodge both spinning cars and stop in the emergency lane. Since I ended up between both cars the cop first thought I was involved. After he took my witness statement I helped him push the participants off the side of the road, so rush hour traffic could resume....Jim Thompson

Let me know where you live so I can avoid all roads around there!
Then get a long roll of paper. A really long one. And start adding other areas to avoid:
- The Long Island Expressway
- Van Wyck Expressway
- 101 south of S.F.
- All of the city of L.A.
- Nearly the whole European continent

These Northeast folks don't understand places where the speed limit is
75 or 80. (and don't most folks think "10 over" is OK?) Hell even here in SW Florida the typical speed limit on a rural 2 lane blacktop is 60. If you aren't doing 75, old ladies in Cadallacs will give you the finger as they pass. On I-75 85 is not unusual at all and 80 won't even get a glance from a cop. Now Maryland, that is a speed trapping, 55 MPH, 1 over is a ticket driving nightmare.
If it had been in the front, you would likely be dead.
I had an Opel Cadet I drove to Cincinnati every day when I worked at Cincinnati Electronics. I was driving home one night and heard a whirring noise. I pulled over to inspect the car and found the sidewall in the right rear tire had holes big enough to put my whole hand into the tire, and I had been driving it at 55 MPH.
Another time I lost the right front tire on my 66 GTO at 35 MPH, and nearly rolled it before I could stop it. It was nighttime, and I ran over some sliver of metal on I-75. I had just pulled back onto the Interstate after ruining the right rear tire, and hadn't even made it off the ramp.

Don't exagerate, there's hardly a male in Eu that hasn't tried that at least once. That's 175 Km/h. Every time I go to the seaside I typically exceed 180-190Km/h, sometimes up to 220Km/h (~140mph). And Jim's got a better car than my 98 VW Passat.
I do it on autobahn, though, with a fence preventing wildlife entering the road.

I have a motorbike (Suzuki SV1000S), I get about 30 mpg riding fast on it. 8-(
Leon
My old Ducati 750 used to get at least 70mpg at 70mph, on a early morning Sunday runs, but that was pre CCTV days

Not in my experience. In Maryland, on the superhighways, the state police set their radar at 20 over the limit. This is all about revenue generation and there just isn't enough money in a 1 MPH over ticket.
On the little winding 2 lane country roads, they are somewhat more critical, but these roads are tagged closer to the safe speed limit anyway.

When I was a kid, I had a Yamaha 100cc Enduro bike, probably about a
1971 or so. I never checked the actual mileage. But the published spec was 170.4 mpg!I do remember riding on back roads, all day long on about $0.25 of gas.

Yes.
Driving for fifty years? Then you are old a feeble. Your eyesight and reaction time has degraded along with your mental capabilities.
