Way back in graduate school, we etched tungsten wires to a fine point to 'field emit'* electrons into liquid helium. (Several kV and ~ uA of current.)

I think the 'process' near the tip was more complicated than simple filed emmision.

This sounds kinda cool Phil! I was searching for "Field emission" + "Nitrogen gas" (or nitrogen atmosphere, or N2) I got lots of hits, but nothing pertinent. (Lots of MOCVD studies etc.) Do you know some 'magic' keyword I might add to my search? Can you really see currents that are exponential with the voltage? A real indication of tunneling! (But high vacuum not needed!)

Oh yea. I got my touchis burned several times for putting the wrong = thing into a vacuum test chamber. A least once it wouldn't pump down due to = the monster outgassing. =20
