Freshman washout courses are designed to shed the stupid and the people who can't be bothered to do the work required.
If you can do the work they are designed to get you a level where can cope the more advanced stuff you'd have to master if you did enroll in the next course in the series.
You found the experience awful and gave up chemistry, so the course did exactly what it was intended to do. The original sense of "awful" was "awe-inspiring" but everybody knows how to run freshman washout course, even Tulane, so there's no awe involved.
Yuck, but unsurprising.
