LCD failure

What causes the 'burn in' to images on a LCD (TV) screen.

What mechanism is going on to cause the effect? (Is it a crystal effect or a driver problem or what

It's a memory effect but typically not permanent like on a CRT.

People have remedied that by displaying an all white image for a long time (during nights etc.) but turning the brightness down so the backlight doesn't wear so much. Also leaving the display turned off for a long time or displaying a rotating image pattern can help, depending on what was "burned in".

Google "LCD image burn" without the quotes.
