job thing, maybe

One of my engineers left (to go teach in Indonesia or something, one of those midlife things) and, talking things over, we decided that our design engineers spend a lot of time on test procedures, test sets, and writing test programs. If we had some help on those, we could design more stuff. So instead of looking for a new design engineer, we might actually prefer a test guy.

So, this person would

Work with engineering at the design stage to make sure things are nice to build and test. Unique opportunity to be a PITA and get paid for it.

Write test programs, mostly in PowerBasic.

Design and build (or get built) test sets.

Write test procedures.

Hostile prototype testing. Don't let us get away with anything lazy or stupid.

Occasionally do some production testing, like when the regular folks are on vacation or whatever.

Watch over returns and look for failure patterns, and then fix them. (Our existing people are too timid to storm into engineering and demand that we fix problems. They just quietly repair failed units and send them back.)

Possibly, eventually, manage the test department if talents and personalities permit.

Location is downtown (SoMa) San Francisco.

I figure I'll do the usual ads (Craigslist, SF Chronicle, SJ Mercury, Monsterboard?) but I figure I'd post it here in case anybody is interested or knows someone who might be.

My mail is jjlarkin atthing highlandtechnology dottycom.

Well, SF is an expensive place to live and test stuffs. Perhaps you should send them over here. We will break them down for you.

If you can't find someone, I am perfectly willing to look into my past as a test engineer and _define_ test sets for you (for a very reasonable rate too).

At 5000 miles, it's not easy to do the tests, but perhaps it might ease getting someone into it.

Cheers

5000 miles? Is that Hawaii or Atlantis?

It's the Empire AFAIK, probably a tad more than 5000 miles. Hawaii isn't that far away unless there had been some major tectonic plate shift.

John, I'll let people know when I come across anyone who might fit in. You might want to let Intel's HR folks know. They had staggered layoffs this year. Intel does a lot of signal integrity testing which sounds quite similar to what I believe you guys need.

What kind of money are you talking about?

I have relatives living at Mr. Larkin's street. Apartments are over $1500. Houses are over $700,000. I am sure he will pay you enough to live in the tenderloin.

Rent is really cheap in Opelousas, Louisiana. You could spend the rest of your life there and save a bundle.

Yeah, OK.

So, what kind of money are you talking about?

I am just doing you a service. Not everyone knows how expensive it is to be "served" by the house speaker. If you want your new employee to last more than a couple of weeks, he/she should know everything about the city. And most of all, the cost of living there.

I would hardly expect to hire a homeless person who knows nothing about the place where he's living. Some people would jump at the chance to live and work in San Francisco, and some wouldn't. I plan to hire the ones who would.

So, tell us what you are paying and we can decide whether it's worth going there.

Hmmm...sure sounds tempting. I do love the food at Tommy's Joynt (Van Ness and Geary).

I would need $200K plus a $15K signing bonus. I assume you offer stock options with regular refreshes? ESPP? I currently get 20 days PTO plus 10 holidays per year.

OK, you take his job and I'll take your $200K job, even if it's in New Orlean.

Sounds like you must be very happy just where you are.

No, I'm not. There's no buffalo stew here. The clam chowder is terrible. We have no beautiful bridges. Please help me, John!

I grew up in New Orleans. It is, as they say, a great place to be from.

This is the third time I\'ve asked and still no answer. Is it such a
difficult question?

OK, houses are $700,000. Mortgage would be $4000/month. You don't want more than 1/3 of income for that. So, $12,000/month or $144,000/year is fair.

When someone applies for a job with my company, we expect them to make a case for how they will help us, not for how they expect us to help them. They know for sure that they will be paid, so it's their move to convince us that they will be worth more than they cost.

The big-bucks, signing bonus, show-me-the-benefits thing turns us off. If somebody is good, let them show us, and then we'll have to pay them what they're worth. As they say at HP, pay lags performance.
