In days of olde...

Political opponents were arrested and shipped to prison colonies in Australia or the States.

Now we have a simpler, yet more lethal approach: label them racist or accuse them of sexual abuse.

(Used to be they labeled opponents as "gay", but that's now the in-thing with Dimocrats, so they don't do that anymore ;-) ...Jim Thompson

Not strictly true. You had to be convicted of crime to get transported.

The UK Combination Act of 1799 did make it crime to join a trade union, and some trade unionists were transported for that particular crime, but the p oeple who made the law thought that trade unions were subversive organisati ons (much like many Americans today), and would not have seen it as a mecha nism for dealing wiuth political opponents.

Jim has missed the simplest and most lethal labeling - call them Tea Party supporters, or Trump-followers. It's even worse when they are. Regular Repu blicans work hard to avoid such labeling.
