We used to have a hot water system where there was a cold water header tank in the loft feeding the hot tank on the ground. I could pee quicker than the shower. If someone flushed a toilet or the washer started a rinse cycle the water would suddenly get very hot. Its all been replaced now by a high pressure system. Anyway I wasn't too happy about having half a ton of water residing in the loft.

From a dead start first thing in the morning (or whenever - in other words, just using the shower after it has been sitting idle for a long period of time)...

So in that regard, I can confirm that both HOT and COLD have "flow".

The problem is the temperature regulation is for s*it, once you try to adjust -- but it doesn't exhibit the problem all the time. Just some of the time -- and I can't figure out why. Esp. the "hysterisis" problem with hot getting hotter after you turn the hot down to what should be a trickle - even if cold opened up to full bore. But, turn both valves off, and only open cold, and it's cold very quickly (

I don't know if this will help or not -- but honestly, when water IS being used elsewhere in the house, it really doesn't seem to make any difference. In other words, this problem can manifest (or not manifest) even if someone else is using water in the house.

It doesn't seem related, and regardless, it does indeed occur if I'm the only one home.

If you mean "recently" to mean "ever", then the answer is No. :) At least, not in the last 9 or 10 years, and I think it was new just before that.

Do you have any other single-lever faucets in the house? You may have a bad cartridge in one of them, allowing hot water to mix with the cold water some distance from your shower. That 30-45 seconds may be the time it takes the (warmed) cold water to clear from the distant valve. A hot to cold leak isn't all that unusual for these mixing valves.

That hot water valve in the shower could not possibly be the problem. No way. Nuh- Uh, sir.

A restricted shower head DOES affect the temp, since the hot is usually much less than the cold, the mix valve is pressure AND flow dependent.

A non-restricted head will need a different tap setting to get the same temp than a restricted head does, IDIOT!
