HTL to TTL conversion

I have a draw wire displacement sensor which works at HTL logic levels.



The supply voltage for the sensor will be 12V and I need to translate the outputs to 0..5V levels suitable for decoding with an HCTL-2022 quadrature decoder.



Would a 74HC4050 be a good choice or is there a better alternative?

Lots of missing info:

HTL logic level... what levels? Seems a "non-standard" "standard"

Speed? If slow, just use a comparator.

Hi Jim,

I'm not sure about the "levels" for HTL - I have searched but not turned up anything useful. The outputs are square waves 0 to 11.9V

There are 3 signals - A,B and Index and the maximum frequency will be

200 KHz.

If you are certain about those output levels then you can use the 74HC4050.

Can't we do something more interesting here? For example, for a nice HTL logic threshold, near 6V, we could use a PNP transistor in a level-shifter stage with a 6V-threshold:

2.7k in ----/\\/\\----, 0/12 | pnp e\\| |--- +5 /| 2.2k | gnd ---/\\/\\----+----- out 0/5

Yep, that'll do it. Looks like it's sized to have a relatively low input threshold to accommodate quite a range of input levels.

I said it was more interesting, as opposed to _boring_ and if we're counting, that's three channels or 9 parts, not 18. And that's a 6V threshold, instead of 1.35V (worst-case) for the hc4050, improving signal noise immunity by over 4x.

Nine components with 21 solder connections, instead of sixteen. OK, that's 31% more.

Sure I'd use the '4050 (hey, it's an oldtime favorite of mine and tens of thousands were used in my designs years ago), but I'd first cast an admiring glance at alternate ideas.
