Seems like there's hardly a piece of commercial software or an entertainment medium protection scheme that has not been cracked quickly (and by amateurs who give their work away). Breaking microcontroller code protection is not so difficult.
If you can control the hardware with a lot of SOCs and such like

People are very good at reverse-engineering that, and there are very good tools around. See this interesting report on breaking DirCrypt malware; their detective work is pretty impressive:
Interesting. They break their teeth on the fact that the first 1024 bytes of the mostly-decrypted file are RSA encrypted, and they don't have the key. If the baddies had just done that to the whole HDD, they'd have been stuck.
