Channels 2 through 6 are low band VHF, which provide the longest range service. 30 to 50 MHz low band VHF was prized spectrum for commercial two way radio. State govenments loved it, becasue they could cover an entire state with a half dozen 250 to 330 watt base stations. I have picked up skip on Ch4 from southern Texas to Ohio in the daytime.

And because of the physiccs very directional.
