Edison was working on the light bulb in 1879. JJ discovered the electron 18 years later.??

Ha! Edison did not realize he was close to proving electrons. But, I think he wanted the $$$$ and wanted light bulbs. Light bulbs make more money than electrons. :P

Edison missed the point on nearly everything except making money from stuff. In the US, he claimed to have invented may things that already existed somewhere else in the world. This includes the light bulb.
He nearly had a recifier that could magically turn AC into DC with no moving parts. He was in favor of DC power and hence didn't think of AC being turned into DC.
The experiment with two generators that nearly got him killed was within a few thinking steps of the amplidyne. He was focused on making power for DC lightbulbs.
Edison the hacker :P Wrong or right, original or not, Edison spent the time to try to bring technology to people. At the time, I suspect few people were doing that. He should get points for that..
What Edison did then is not unlike now.. People still research existing technology today and turn it into something commercial. Ex: Windows
