Gloss/undercoat paint grrr

Both Wilko and Leyland undercoats now have near zero ability to fill hairline cracks. It seems they've changed. This is a total pain on aging exterior woodwork. Ideas/suggestions welcome.

There are now new space age calks. Cheap and easy to work with putty knife. Like they say, use a stain blocker primer. Looks like there are a lot of c ombination primer/finish coat products these days, I guess they save you ti me, which you'll need since your prep time will be about 4x your paint time .

How thick is silicon conformal coating? E.g., MG Chemical's 422B acrylated silicone spray? They don't say, but it appears quite thin.
