They use some lead compound as a plasticizer in vinyl. There's an ongoing media frenzy about soft plastic school lunch boxes, and there were some warnings about plastic roll up blinds that shed a lot of lead when they aged in the sun and broke down into plastic dust.

Occasionally I read to my wife what's written in large capital print on the beer bottles: "Women should not drink alcoholic beverages".

In California stuff like this is really getting overboard. I have seen devices that were too small to hold all those warnings so they had 2-3 tags dangling from them. Do not put into mouth while foot is in mouth and so on. One tag got caught in a gear and that almost caused a serious accident. Pathetic. We really need to lose some bureaucrats. Starve the beats, but voters here don't seem to comprehend.

Pretty soon the warnings may have to be bilingual.

Same here in the stores. After Christmas I'll have to go to the hardware store and replace some herramientas that broke during the year.

It amazes me that it isn't expected anymore that one learns the language of the country one immigrates into. I had to do it myself and more than once. It isn't that hard. Bilingual education was the topper, the perfect and sad attempt to create a two-class society.

Hell - lemme pick on my own state - New York. A number of years ago (early 90's ?) they came out with labels required to be on gas pump nozzles that warned you not to drink the stuff.

PVC is not chemically stable - it releases HCl with time, which leads to a self-catalyzing reaction. To scavenge the HCl, lead (Pb) is/was added to the PVC.

Well, the PVC is not pure PVC. And Pb is on the way out there, but the whole PVC thing seems a bit nasty, especially as the other stabilizers are no polymers and this can leech out (though the government document say's it doesn't, I'm not that happy to have organotin compounds in a vegetable oil bottle...)

Man those things were cheap- I once visited a Taiwan factory that makes them- a whole whack of grubby little 1.5" extruders running flat-out, and calculate that an entire container filled with their product sold for less than $10K. The mainland Chinese are probably making them for half of that these days.

This was actually a very new building, built in the mid 80s, I think. It was about 3 blocks down from UC at the top of University Ave. I worked there for 6 years, and nobody I knew had a clue about why the sign was there (even the building management folks didn't know or weren't talking). One thing I hated was that the windows didn't open (unless you took extreme measures, of course ;)

Well, you do know, don't you, that California is the training ground for idiot politicians? ;-)
