Ferrite question

How much heat is dissipated in deeply saturated ferrite? I am playing with home cooked series trigger transformer. It does get hot. The wire (fairly thin) does not seem to get hot (as long as I can judge by back side of my pinkie) ??? :o(


It depends on the material type, the volume of the ferrite, the frequency and the saturation flux density.

See if you can dig the information out of the ferrite manufacturer's web site. I can't recall finding this information, but I can't recall ever looking for it. If you don't know who manufactures your ferrite, try Fair-Rite -- but I would expect that the core loss would not be a very constant parameter from one core material to the next.

Note that if you have a B-H curve you can estimate the energy lost per cycle, and go from there directly to power loss.

Many ferrite data sheets show a graph of milliwatts per cubic centimeter (or equivalent units) for various frequencies and flux swings.

It often even isn't from one batch to the next. Also, Michael should keep in mind that core loss is temperature dependent and with some ferrites they reach a minimum at an elevated temperature. Go beyond that and things could seriously run away, and fast.

And make sure the fire insurance policy is current :-)
