Fabric gauges?

Are fabric gauges the same as sheet metals gauges?

e.g. Is 22 gauge vinyl ~0.030 thick?

(Reupholstering project ;-)

There are confusing "gages/gauges" in sewing definitions. Yours is _thread-count_. Mine is _thickness_.

It's one of Shakespeare's jokes--"Man he works from sun to sun, but woman's work is never done." That can be taken as "their work is overwhelming in quantity" or "they never do their work".

Aroint thee, varlet!

I'm begining to think the gauge number is the thickness in thousands of an inch (mils). Mike

_Sheet metal_ gauges aren't the same as sheet metal gauges. There's different gauges for different sorts (iron, brass, aluminum) of material, there's different gauges for the _same_ material, etc.

So if your question means "does the material thickness have a monotonic relationship with the gauge number?" -- I think that's a very good bet. If you question means "can I look at a chart titled 'sheet metal gauge vs. thickness' and tell how thick my vinyl is?" -- Heh heh. Heh heh heh heh. Heh heh heh hee hee hee hee heh heh (etc.)
